In order to avoid injury and personal liability claims, it is crucial to ensure that all the ramps in your building are fully compliant with the Equality Act (England, Scotland and Wales) and the Disability Discrimination Act (Northern Ireland) regulations.
The DDA and Equality Acts work to protect those with disabilities and blindness, stating that all buildings must have “reasonable access”
Ensuring the ramp complies with regulation
- In order to be ‘reasonably accessible’ a ramp must:
- Be at least 1.5m wide
- Have a maximum gradient of 1:20 at 10m
- Support 100mm high raised kerbs along any open side of the ramp
- Have a continuous handrail
- Be fully equipped with contrasting landings to the ramp surface
- Have a non-slip surface
